Caffeine: The Digital Circus
Floorbangrs & Global Dance Music
June 15, 2013
National Western Complex
Photo, Video, Review
Great Vibe, No Drama, Awesome Sound
3/5 Stages Had Poor Lighting, No Ferris Wheel
It’s good to return camera in hand for Floorbangrs 2nd annual Digital Circus. Remaining at the National Western Complex, the circus dome was moved to the eastern side of the building and the stage was decked out with something straight from a Tim Burton film. I liked the inflatables, they were easier to navigate than the whacky waving inflatable arm-flailing tubemen at Floorbangrs Glo 8. Lighting was heavy in two areas – the outdoor stage, and the hard dance stage buried deep within the complex. Everywhere else, a pair of nightvision goggles came in handy.
The sound was well done for an event this large. Surprisingly enough none of the stages conflicted in audio, and transitions from one stage to another was like choosing the next track on Pandora between 5 excellent EDM stations. Rain was an issue early in the event and I never saw the bouncy castle go to use – or any other “rides” that were advertised. The outdoor dancing platform was against the stairs of the complex, when it may have been more appealing in the center of the dome. Dancers had great costumes & makeup really fitting the theme of a “Digital Circus”; varying from clowns, mysterious characters in a van Gogh painting, or attendees of a masquerade ball. Indoor performer lighting made for great video stock, while the outdoor was difficult to photograph – you can find performer photographs @ facebook/incisionphotography.
I was let down a little – but let’s consider the conditions. Caffeine 2012 was held at the 1ST Bank Center, a monumental venue, and was a completely different event by a larger set of production crews. It can be safely said many artists and fans alike mixed feelings about the event. The Digital Circus 2012 was an outdoor event, while Caffeine 2012 was an indoor event – and both had unique marketing campaigns. We’re trying to mix Clowns… and Robot Wasps? – “mascot” imagery of each event. Both events relied heavily upon previous years promotional content, working to revive a dying angle.
It would have been cool to move the dome into the venue, open seating, and spread out the Tim Burton tentacles. Lights were impressive outdoors and it was great being able to smoke during the show – but being outside didn’t make the event any more fun than if it were inside, and would have still followed suite with the Caffeine 2012 indoor “garden” theme. Alas, hindsight spitballing. The event was fantastic, although it’s debatable it ever reached its true potential visually.
Also keep in mind Sonic Bloom was occurring simultaneously, which was in a more “outdoorsy” region of Colorado, with trees and wildlife and raver bambi. It’s hard to compete with other large outdoor events in Colorado, but Caffeine: The Digital Circus did a very good job gathering the audience. People were scattered about so it was less often any stage reached it’s capacity – but it’s safe to say all the performers received fantastic exposure.

I had a lot of fun at the event, it was a “no hassle” P.L.U.R. environment. Water was steep in price, but I thought all 50+ DJ’s gave a great show! You can find pictures of most the performing artists in the galleries below!
